Is it really the end? What developers are saying about the upcoming Java 7 End-of-Life.

Is it really the end? What developers are saying about the upcoming Java 7 End-of-Life.

All good things must come to an end, or so the saying goes. Oracle  recently announced that Java 7 will be End-of-Life in April, 2015. We put together a quick survey of developers to see how companies were planning to respond, and the results are in the infographic to the right (click to get the full size version in pdf). 56% of the firms in our survey run more than half of their applications on Java, so Oracle’s announcement has a big impact on their businesses.

Overall our survey shows that organizations want to upgrade on their own timetables and often don’t immediately move to the latest Java version for all applications. Nothing’s wrong with their current Java version, so they don’t rush to upgrade, which might introduce problems to systems that are running fine. Instead, they want an option that gives them the flexibility to migrate on their own timetable months or even years after the official end of life date.

The choices available are limited. You can upgrade on a short time schedule, buy a support contract from Oracle, do nothing (continue to run an old version, but unsupported), or look for someone else that can provide production Java support. A surprisingly small number – only about 10% – say they are planning to purchase support from Oracle. About half plan to upgrade to Java 8, a few plan to do nothing, but many others are looking for a better option.

One option to consider is to switch to Azul Zulu® and get affordable, world-class support with a knowledgeable person on the phone from the first call. Our support lifespan for major releases is a full 10 years. You can stay on Java 7, or even Java 6, far longer and upgrade on your own schedule.

Thanks to all who have participated in the survey so far. We’ve kept it live and are still getting responses. If you’d like to weigh in, fill out the survey (it’s only 5 questions) here.
