Java Without the Jitter – Eliminating Outliers and Reducing Latency in Financial Systems

Presenter: Gil Tene, Azul Systems CTO and Co-founder

In this presentation, Gil discusses the historic pitfalls of Java application latency and jitter behavior, and explains how modern Java applications can finally achieve the long sought after goal of continuously consistent latency at high sustainable throughputs. He discusses how Java applications can easily achieve worst case platform latencies of 10msec or less “out of the box”, and display maximum platform latencies at 1-2 milliseconds with very little tuning effort. He also describes some extreme tuning methods that can bring Java applications to 100 microseconds and below.

In discussing examples of latency behavior, Gil shows some easy-to-use sanity-checking tools for latency measurement, along with some actionable guidelines and recommendations for credible characterization. While simple before/after real-world results should speak for themselves, Gil also covers some of the “secret sauce” that makes this breakthrough in Java platform behavior possible.
