Company Background: Arbitron Inc. (NYSE: ARB) is an international media and marketing research firm serving the media (radio, television, cable and out-of-home) and mobile industries and advertising agencies and advertisers around the world. Arbitron’s businesses measure network and local market radio audiences across the United States, survey the retail, media and product patterns of U.S. consumers, provide mobile audience measurement and analytics in the United States, Europe, Asia and Australia, and develop application software used for analyzing media audience and marketing information data.
The company launched its new Portable People Meter (PPM™) that tracks consumers’ exposure to media. It is a cell-phone-sized device that consumers wear throughout the day. The system works using identification codes embedded in the audio portion of the transmission. As consumers listen to radio or watch TV, the system automatically logs their activity.
Business Challenge: Arbitron’s new PPM was experiencing operational stability issues and long garbage collection pauses as a result of heavy loads.
Solution: Azul Appliances eliminated garbage collection pauses and out of memory errors.
Software: The Arbitron Portable People Meter system runs on JBoss.
Benefits: By using Azul, Arbitron was able to improve reliability and provide consistent response times.
