BT Chooses New Compute Model from Azul Systems® to Power Demand Driven Infrastructure

Slough, Berkshire, UK – 3 April, 2006 – Azul Systems, Inc., the pioneer of the industry’s first network attached processing solution, today announced that BT has selected Azul Compute Appliances as a critical component of its network service delivery infrastructure. Azul will enable BT to deliver massive throughput and scalability to some of its most transaction-intensive applications and services, such as those based on the Java™ platform or Microsoft® .NET™ framework, drive out significant cost from existing infrastructure and form the foundation of a new class of on-demand services for current and future customers.

Network attached processing provides massive amounts of compute capacity and memory as a shared network service, similar to the manner in which network attached storage provides shared storage capacity to datacentres. BT’s selection of network attached processing is seen as key to transforming itself into a next generation, agile Information Communications Technology (ICT) provider that offers swift scalability, performance and manageability, all at a fraction of the cost of traditional server computing models.

“The Azul solution is optimised for the transaction intensive nature of our evolving business model, enabling us to more quickly roll out increased capabilities and richer services to our customers without the speculative capacity planning and over-provisioning that was once needed with more traditional approaches,” said Claire Rawlins, director, operational integrity, BT. Rawlins went on to say that the new model of network attached processing is helping with greater efficiencies in resource sharing, reducing power and energy costs and eliminating overall management complexity. “These are significant cost savings and provide major competitive advantage in the speed and quality of services BT plans to deliver,” Rawlins added.

BT, like most commercial enterprises, faces growing challenges from a lack of space, as well as ever-increasing costs of running large numbers of systems, many of which are underutilised. Regardless of operating systems or underlying existing hardware, Azul Compute Appliances accelerate a customers’ ability to scale their applications at dramatically lower cost by eliminating the need to buy new servers for every new application or service that is deployed.

“Azul is very proud that BT has selected our technology as a part of their 21CN transformation initiative,” said Stephen DeWitt, president and chief executive officer, Azul Systems. “The elegance of network attached processing delivers demand driven resources as a shared service with unprecedented flexibility; this will allow BT to seamlessly scale their business applications and services, easily meet changing business needs and bridge the gap between ongoing datacentre costs and revenue generating opportunities.

About Azul Systems

Azul Systems, Inc. has pioneered the industry’s first network attached processing solution, designed to unbound compute resources for transaction-intensive applications and services, such as those based on the Java™ platform or Microsoft® .NET™ framework. Without application level modifications, binary compatibility requirements or operating system dependencies, this fundamentally new approach eliminates the need to capacity plan at the application level and dramatically lowers the cost and complexity associated with the traditional delivery of computing resources.
