Adding AI features to existing Jakarta EE applications (Azul Payara 7)

payara payara

Having commercial support from Payara, who own the codebase, really takes open-source to the next level. They validated our configuration, made recommendations for improvement, and gave us confidence we were getting the most out of the product and making the best decisions from the start.

Neil Openshaw, Senior Manager Software Engineer

Payara is the de-facto middleware at Rakuten Card. We’ve found it wonderful to use, even for new hires – with Payara leveraging developers’ existing skill sets so no retraining is required.

Arshal Ameen, Senior Architect, Rakuten Credit Card

Payara Platform is super stable and patches to issues are delivered faster than we notice them! For me, as developer, it is important to have access to a Nexus server where I can automatically download the latest releases.

Martin Gysel, DevOps Engineer

The software has been tremendously easy to work with. Our transition from WebLogic to Payara Enterprise is still in progress and things are progressing nicely. We have found Payara Server Enterprise to be a lot more user friendly and approachable than WebLogic.

IT Manager, United States Coast Guard

Payara Server is a solid platform, which is very stable and easy to maintain. There are no typical server-side problems, such as huge log files which saturate the OS or cause hanging issues. The support is great.

Claudio Mapelli, Regional IT Manager

Azul Payara Server FAQs

What is Azul Payara Server?

A Jakarta EE 11 certified application server for mission-critical production. It runs Jakarta EE and Java EE applications in the data center, in containers, and on every major cloud, with monthly security patches on a published schedule and transparent per-vCore pricing.

How does Azul Payara Server differ from the Azul Payara Server Community?

Azul Payara Server adds enterprise-grade support with guaranteed SLAs, a multi-phase lifecycle per major release, security patches backported across supported versions, and production-grade tooling. Azul Payara Community is the free, community-supported edition.

Do I have to use Azul Core, the Azul JDK?

No. Azul Payara Server runs on any compatible JDK. Azul Core, Azul’s supported builds of OpenJDK, is available from Azul as a separate product, so the application server and the JVM can come from one vendor.

Is the JDK bundled?

No. Azul Core is a separate Azul product, downloaded separately. The benefit is one vendor for the JDK and the application server, not a bundle.

How are security issues handled?

Azul is a registered CVE Numbering Authority under CISA and DHS oversight. Security patches ship monthly on a published calendar and are backported across every supported major version.

Which Java SE versions are supported?

Azul Payara 7 supports Java SE 21 and 25, both LTS. Azul Payara 6 supports 11, 17, and 21; Azul Payara 5 supports 8, 11, 17, and 21.

Can I deploy to Kubernetes and the cloud?

Yes. Azul Payara Server is optimized for Docker and Kubernetes and runs on AWS, Azure, and GCP.

What support plans are available?

Two levels, Standard or Premium, with guaranteed SLAs.

Can I run Spring Boot applications?

A Spring application packaged as a standard WAR deploys to Azul Payara Server like any Jakarta EE archive. A Spring Boot executable (fat) JAR is a different artifact; running it on a Jakarta EE server means repackaging, not a direct deploy.
