Sunnyvale, Calif., November 16, 2011 – Azul Systems, the award-winning leader in Java runtime scalability, announced today that Azul Systems CTO and Co-Founder Gil Tene will lead an hourlong session on “The Application Memory Wall — Thoughts on the State of the Art in Garbage Collection” at QCon San Francisco 2011, held November 16-18.
For a decade, application instance memory growth and consumption have remained stagnant, with today’s typical Java application instance using only a fraction of a modern server’s memory and compute capacity. This is in sharp contrast to predictions of the mid-1990s, which expected hardware capacities to run into growth bottlenecks, and for applications to continue to stretch server capabilities to their limits.
In “The Application Memory Wall — Thoughts on the State of the Art in Garbage Collection,” Mr. Tene will offer some insight on historically stagnant Java application instance memory growth and consumption and the key technical challenges that have fostered the application memory wall. He will also review the state of the art in garbage collection within managed runtimes in general and in commercial Java Virtual Machines (JVMs) in particular. Finally, Mr. Tene will offer possible solutions, and a look at what will be possible when the Application Memory Wall falls.
